Srotoswini Subranarekha envisions a future where everyone can live a quality life, independently and dignified within their own circumference with access to quality education and sufficient means of earning in spite of their socio-economic background.
About Us
Srotoswini Subarnarekha’s focus is concentrated on providing women and children from lower socio-economic background with education, skills and jobs needed for them to live a dignified life. Our work aims at providing them with the values and skills at minimal cost, without compromising on standard and using scientifically proven methodology.

Our History
Srotoswini Subarnarekha born on 17th September, 2005 is the brain child of Miss. Keka Mitra who started the society with 70 students and their mothers. In line with our aims, we took regular surveys of slum areas of Ariadaha-Dakshnieswar (Northern suburbs of Kolkata) locality and identified the needs of those families. We figured out that in order to build a prosperous society, the women have to be equal to men and they should be able to live with self-respect which may be earned by being able to financially contribute to the family. Then, we identified such families and started training them for art and crafts. For example, they would make objects of daily use – bags – out of scrap material. However, we quickly realized that the children of such working mothers need to be taken care in order to make a self-sustained family. Soon, we expanded to the poor and needy people in the slum area of Northern suburbs of Kolkata and Howrah where the children of slum area would be provided with free education and allowed to experience other activities such as drawing, free hand exercise, recitation etc. We have been organizing annual events such as sit and draw, recitation and other cultural events for the children of poor economic backgrounds.
Further, we realized that, early nurturing is needed in order to utilize the complete potential of a child. Thus, early educational training in a scientific manner is needed. Believing in the old proverb of “each one teach one”, we established a kindergarten school, AGM Shishumahal, for providing education at a nominal cost to children of needs. We received help from Kamarhati Town Congress and Pratyay, an organization run by Congress to materialize this project. We recently had our first group of students graduated and we are getting more students who are being trained and are placed in educational institutes of repute in and around Kolkata.
However, we do face obstacles and hurdles in the path of materializing our dreams. Lack of financial support is a lingering problem. The organization is run based on donation money from the members, but more money is needed to fulfil our dreams, thus donations are very welcome. Further, our dream of expanding the school is also obstructed by lack of a more permanent facility/building. The present building is verbally donated and is not appropriate for a permanent establishment. We are in search for a building/land for the school and would highly appreciate if some friend could come up with a proposal.
Over the years, we had many friends and well-wishers with us along the road. We believe you will continue to support us through the ups and downs to build a better society.
